What software will convert Windows disk to a basic disk without destroying the data

Computer users especially HP users often convert basic disk to dynamic by accident when they are creating a new partition. Indeed, users can create much more partitions on dynamic disk, but problems may emerge from time to time. For example, users will be unable to dual boot Windows 7 Home Premium in Windows 8 Pro since almost all Windows free editions do not support dynamic disk. Therefore, the problem what software will convert dynamic disk to basic without destroying data is commonly seen.

Ways to Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk

Microsoft equips a function to system snap-in Disk Management to revert dynamic disk to basic, but users have to delete all simple or dynamic volumes in advance. If not, users will see the following situation:

From the screenshot above, we see the function "Convert to Basic Disk" is grayed out and can not be used. Therefore, Windows built-in Disk Management is not the software which can convert dynamic disk to basic without destroying data. At this time, some users may feel desperate and badly need a safe enough solution.

As a matter of fact, third-party partition manager is the best alternative to Windows built-in Disk Management. As long as users download an excellent partition magic, they can convert dynamic disk to basic without destroying any data and in pretty simple operations. And MiniTool Partition Wizard can meet users’ demands.

Revert Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk with MiniTool Partition Wizard

By using this partition manager, users can complete disk conversion without deleting any data or partition. Specific operations are as follows:

Step 1: run MiniTool Partition Wizard to open its main interface:

Step 2: click the area boxed by red line and choose the function "Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic".

Step 3: click "Apply" button in toolbar to apply disk conversion and confirm to restart computer in accordance with prompts. After restart, let's open Windows Disk Management to check whether dynamic disk has been reverted to basic disk:

Now, we can say we are successful to convert dynamic disk to basic without destroying any data or partition. After that, both dual boot and multi-boot can be realized. And other disadvantages of dynamic disk can be avoided at the same time.

Note: MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition does not support operating dynamic disk, and users need to purchase MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional Edition in stead, which is quite useful and economical.

Convert disk 0 from simple volume to primary partition

Scenario: I'm running Windows Server 2003 on disk 0 (a dynamic disk), and there is a 40GB simple volume where I had planned to install a copy of Windows 7 Starter so that I can change over from 2003 to 7. Nevertheless, it seems that I can't install Windows 7 on a simple volume. According to Microsoft my only choice is to convert disk 0 to basic in Disk Management, but it means everything on it including Server 2003 installation will be lost. Now, I want to know whether there is a way to just convert one simple volume to primary partition rather than convert the whole disk to basic.

Solution: unquestionably, there is no way available to restore one simple volume to basic, and reverting dynamic disk to basic is the only choice to convert a simple volume to primary partition. Fortunately, there is a third party partitioning tool which can convert dynamic disk to basic without deleting any volume (Windows Disk Management forces users to delete all existing volumes), and users only need to restart operating system after conversion is completed. MiniTool Partition Wizard is the very partition manager we introduced. Next, we will show users how to convert disk 0 to basic.

Convert Simple Volume to Primary Partition with MiniTool Partition Wizard

Step 1: launch the partitioning tool to get the following image:

Step 2: select the dynamic disk namely disk 0 from disk map and choose "Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic".

Step 3: click "Apply" button on the top to apply changes. During this process, users will be required to restart operating system since the operated disk is being used. Please do as told. After restarting system, let's open Windows Disk Management:

Now, we can see disk 0 has been converted to basic successfully, and users can install Windows 7 on a primary partition. If there is no other primary partition except the existing system partition, users can set a logical partition as primary, and MiniTool Partition Wizard can help complete this operation without data loss.

If users are also not allowed to install Windows on a simple volume, now convert simple volumes to primary partitions with MiniTool Partition Wizard. It is an amazing partitioning tool doing much better than Windows Disk Management.

Can't Create Recovery Drive Windows 10

Help! Can't Create Recovery Drive Windows 10

Early this year, Windows 10 had become the 2nd most commonly used desktop platform in the world. Now, seven months later, its dominant position is getting more and more stable. As so many computer users go for Windows 10, Windows 10 system security is arousing hot debate. While browsing Windows-related forums, we find numbers of Windows 10 users complaining that they can't create recovery drive in Windows 10.

A typical example from answers.microsoft.com is shown here:

Cannot create recovery drive in Windows 10

I have the exact same problem on a laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series) that was just purchased (8/1/2015) with Windows 10 pre-installed. I'm using a 32GB flash drive. I also checked the box to include system files. It gets a little past 1/2 way on the progress bar and then displays the same useless message:

"We can't create the recovery drive"
"A problem occurred while creating the recovery drive."

No further information or help forth coming.

See! That author is not the only one who is unable to create recovery drive Windows 10. Next, we would like to analyze two things:
1. How to create a recovery drive in Windows 10?
2. How to deal with "we can't create the recovery drive" error during the creating process?

Let's go to the detail.

Quick Review on Creating Recovery Drive in Windows 10

If you’re running Windows 10, you need to create USB recovery drive that allows you to restore your system from a restore point, an image backup, or through a complete reinstall if Windows won't allow to access. Same with Windows 8, Windows 10 offers the option to create recovery drive. First of all, let's have a quick review on how to create USB recovery drive:

Before you do:
  • Prepare a USB drive that is no smaller than 4 GB.
  • Make sure your USB drive is connected successfully.
  • Make sure your computer is running Windows 10.

Step 1: At Search bar type: create recovery drive. Windows 10 will list the best match and the specific utility will appear in the first place. Please hit Enter on your keyboard then.

create a recovery drive

Step 2: The Recovery Drive utility comes out immediately. Please keep the option "Back up system files to the recovery drive" checked (to back up system files necessary for a full reinstall) and continue.

include system files

Step 3: Please wait patiently until the wizard successfully detects your USB drive and gets prepared to copy files. Then press Next to go on.

wait for scan
select usb drive

Step 4: You will receive a warning message saying everything on the USB drive will be deleted. Please make sure you have made a backup of the important data if there is any before you continue.

start creation

Step 5: Creating the recovery drive can take some time. You should wait patiently or you can go for something else.

copying system

Step 6: When the recovery drive is ready, click Finish.

recovery drive ready

tip

No product key is required when using a Recovery Drive to reinstall Windows 10. But if you do a complete reinstall, you are likely to be required to enter your Product ID number to prove that you can legally run Windows 10 on this machine. So you should Google a product which can save the Product ID number and help you activate Windows 10.

Attention! "We Can't Create the Recovery Partition"

Although it seems rather easy to create a recovery drive in Windows 10, many users report that during the creating process, if they uncheck "Back up system files to the recovery drive", Windows 10 Recovery Drive can be created successfully. But if this option is chosen, the creating process always fails, and they come across the error message saying "we can't create the recovery drive, a problem occurred while creating the recovery drive."

can't create recovery drive

Take a look at a typical case that till now 138 people vote helpful from answers.microsoft.com:

"I tried on desktop PC....

1)  to create a recovery drive with "backup system files to the recovery drive" tick box checked.  On clicking "next", received the window advising that; "we can't create the recovery drive" plus additional text stating; "A problem occurred while creating the recovery drive". No further information or help forth coming. Finish.
2) to create a recovery drive with "backup system files to the recovery drive" tick box unchecked. On clicking "next", received message requesting; "connect a USB Flash Drive" with additional text stating that the "drive must be able to hold at least 512MB and that everything on the drive will be deleted".
Install USB flash drive (64GB);
Auto detected as H:\RECOVERY and process of creating recovery drive starts;
Preparing, Formatting and Copying Utilities;

Successfully completes creating a recovery drive. "

Not the only case right? Then how can you cope with "can't create recovery drive Windows 10"?

Here is the deal:

Deal With "Can't Create Windows 10 Recovery Drive"

Actually, we think you can do these things:

solution 1 Solution 1: Scan for Problems

If creating recovery drive in Windows 10 fails, it seems your PC is suffering from a corrupted system file. Here’s how to find out and hopefully fix it:

Step 1: Type cmd in the Search field. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

run cmd as administrator

Step 2: Once you’re inside the command environment, type "sfc/scannow" and press Enter. The System File Checker (SFC) program will examine Windows files and replace any that appear to be corrupt. This scan usually takes about several minutes only.

sfc scannow

Step 3: After the scan, exit command prompt and try creating Windows 10 recovery drive again.

recommend "sfc/scannow" is also helpful to fix blue screen error in Windows 10, read this 8 Solutions to Critical Process Died in Windows 10 to know more information.

solution 2 Solution 2: Try another Flash Drive

It is strange that sometimes users may fail to create Windows 10 recovery drive with flash drive A, but succeed by using flash drive B. From Windowssecrets.com, you know this is not casual:

"I just tried this on a 16GB usb2 drive and it worked. Tried it again on the 8GB and it failed. Same message as before. Funny thing is that the 16GB stick has only 4.33GB used. So the issue on the 8GB stick isn't space."

So when you can't create a recovery drive in Windows 10, you can try using another USB drive to take your chance. After all, USB drives are easy to obtain

solution 3 Solution 3: Create a Windows 10 Installation Media Instead

If you still can't create recovery drive in Windows 10 after trying Solution 1 and Solution 2, you may consider creating a Windows 10 installation media, which is extremely similar with a Windows 10 recovery drive. The major difference is that the installation media defaults to reinstalling Windows, and doesn’t know the details of your particular Windows installation.

Before you do:
You need to download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft.

Step 1: Plug in your flash drive, launch MediaCreationTool.exe, select Create installation media for another PC and follow the prompts.

create installation media

Step 2: When you have selected Language, Edition and Architecture, you will see a screen asking you to choose a medium to use. You may choose to use a USB flash drive which should be at least 3 GB or you can choose to create an ISO file and burn it to a DVD later. Here USB flash drive is chosen. Click Next and continue.

choose media

Step 3: The device is auto detected, and you can start the process:
Downloading Windows 10…
Verifying your download…
Creating Windows 10 media…
When you get the message "Your USB flash drive is ready", all is done.

tip

When you boot from this drive some day to recover Windows 10, you should ignore the big "Install now" button in the middle and click "Repair your computer" in the lower-left corner instead. Then you will get into an environment similar to the Recovery Tool.

repair your computer

solution 4 Solution 4: Backup Windows 10 to a Safe Location

Back up Windows 10 is another solution we can put forward to cope with "unable to create recovery drive Windows 10". When it comes to backup Windows 10, it is a good idea to create some sort of a mirror backup before Microsoft comes up with a better Create Recovery Drive application. And we think 3rd party disk cloning software deserves to be highly recommended due to their easy-to-use feature. For example, MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition has been found more reliable and much more flexible than the similar tools.

As all-in-one free partition manager, MiniTool Partition Wizard Free can help manage basic disk space safely on Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP all editions, like resize partition, merge partition, recover lost partition, convert file system, rebuild MBR, migrate OS, etc. To clone Windows 10, you should employ "Migrate OS to SSD/HD Wizard".

tip

This migrate feature won't move Windows 10 from the original disk to another hard drive, it only makes an exactly same copy of the OS for system backup.
Download Now

Step 1: Launch MiniTool Partition Wizard, then select "Migrate OS to SSD/HD Wizard".

clone windows 10

Step 2: Here you are asked to select the destination disk. Please note that the destination disk must be basic disk and should be large enough to contain your Windows 10. Besides, data in destination disk will be deleted.

select target disk

Step 3: Now choose a copy option to clone Windows 10: fit partitions to entire disk, or keep the original partition size, or customize partition size. In addition, if the destination disk is SSD or advanced format disk, tick Force to align partitions to 1MB.

select copy option

Step 4: Then Partition Wizard will tell you how to boot from the destination disk. Please pay attention to this prompt if you have no idea.

note information

Step 5: Finally click "Apply" to start cloning Widows 10.

confirm changes

Once you have a copy of Windows 10, you can use it to restore OS to the original Windows 10 hard drive or use this copy directly.

recommend Recommendation

1.MiniTool Partition Wizard not only helps to back up Windows 10, but also helps to backup a specific partition with "Copy Partition" feature and even the whole drive with "Copy Disk" feature.
2.Please note that "Copy Partition" is designed to backup data partition, if you want to backup operating system, use "Migrate OS to SSD/HD" or "Copy Disk" instead.

In addition to the use of MiniTool Partition Wizard, you must know that Windows 10 provides built-in Windows Backup and Restore utility, which is able to make system backup to cope with unexpected system crash. Thus, it is also a good idea to use this tool to make a schedule backup of your Window 10 when you can't create recovery drive Windows 10. Migrate OS to SSD/HD VS. Copy Disk in Partition Wizard

Migrate OS to SSD/HD is a very powerful feature in MiniTool Partition Wizard all editions, so does Copy Disk. But many users are confused about their similarities and differences. This article tells Migrate OS VS. Copy Disk.

Similarities between Migrate OS & Copy Disk

1. Both Migrate OS to SSD/HD and Copy Disk support basic disk only.

2. Both Migrate OS to SSD/HD and Copy Disk clone the source data to another drive instead of migrating data. Thus you will get two copies of the same data when either operation completes.

3. Both Migrate OS to SSD/HD and Copy Disk requires a reboot for the operations come down to system partition.

4. Both Migrate OS to SSD/HD and Copy Disk enable to boot computer from the destination drive after your have finished the operations.

Differences between Migrate OS & Copy Disk

Migrate OS to SSD/HD only clones the system related partitions shown as Active&Boot&System (image attached), while Copy Disk clones the whole drive, i.e. all partitions. Thus, the former one can be regarded as system backup and the latter one, disk backup.

Migrate OS VS. Copy Disk

wraning Note:
1. No matter you are going to carry out Migrate OS to SSD/HD or Copy Disk, you should know that the destination drive will be erased, so a backup in advance is necessary if there is any important data on the destination drive.

2. Migrate OS to SSD/HD and Copy Disk require that the source disk and target disk are coincidence in hard disk sector size, otherwise the operations will fail.

How to Clone Hard Drive to SSD for Disk Upgrade

Why SSD is better than HDD

Today many users install operating system on SSD and use HDD to store games, films and other files. If asking them why, they will tell you SSD is doing much better than HDD. But since SSD is much more expensive, so migrating OS to SSD is a wise choice. Wondering why SSD is better than HDD? Let's get to the introduction of them first.

ssd hdd

HDD (Hard disk Drive) is the basic storage in computer. The most prominent symbol for HDD is that it access data with a head located on an arm. HDD consists of many removable parts, making itself easily to get shocked and damaged. At present, the disk capacity of HDD are typically 500G, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, etc., and the sizes can be classified as 3.5 inch, 2.5 inch, 1.8 inch, etc. The interfaces of HDD are always PATA, SATA, SCSI etc.. HDDs with PATA and SATA interfaces are typically suitable for home, with large capacity and lower price; while the SCSI interface is normally used on high-end servers and workstations, with good performance and high stability, but the price is more expensive.

SSD (Solid State Drive) is a kind of hard disk which is made of solid state electronic memory chip arrays, and is composed of control units and memory units (including Flash chip and DRAM chip). SSD is widely used in military, video surveillance, network monitoring, navigation equipments and other fields. Although the cost of SSD is relatively higher than that of HDD, SSD is still gradually spread to the market. The new generation of SSD is generally using SATA-2 interface, SATA-3 interface, SAS interface, MSATA interface, PCI-E interface, NGFF interface, CFast interface and SFF-8639 interface.

SSD has the following advantages over HDD:
1.Faster read-write speed: Solid-state drive does not possess any head, instead, it use flash memory as the storage medium, and the seek time is almost ZERO, without any delay. No matter you are going to run operating system or large software on it, SSD is competent, and the running speed has a qualitative leap.
2.Nonperishable: SSD does not contain any removable mechanical parts internally, so it can calmly face vibration, overturn and drop, minimizing the possibility of data loss when a laptop accidently falls down.
3.Less heat dissipation and zero noise: since SSD adopts flash memory chip, SSD gives out little calorific value. Also, because there is no mechanical motor, the noise value is nearly 0 db.
4.Portability: compared with the traditional HDD, SSD is smaller in volume and lighter in weight, which is convenient for users to take away.

Clone Hard Drive with Best Disk Cloning Software

Why Clone Hard Drive

Today it's a very common requirement for most Windows users to clone a hard drive to another one. As for the reasons, most of them want to copy hard drive to a larger one due to insufficient disk space, some of them want to clone hard drive to SSD for higher efficiency, and some just clone hard drive in Windows 7/8/10 for data backup. No matter what the reason is, it is an indisputable fact that cloning hard drive is now a public demand.

In many cases, users do hard drive clone by using the simplest way copy & paste, which is not a safe method and is time-consuming. Obviously, clone is a better choice than copy & paste. To explain why, we should refer to the difference between copy and clone.

Difference between Clone and Copy

clone So what's the difference between clone and copy? Copy means to make a same version, while clone means more. Clone not only guarantees the files are the same, but also guarantees the same physical location as they are in the source disk. In some cases, a file requires fixed and specified location for normal operation. Once the file is moved, it won't work anymore. So generally speaking, clone is a safer way to replicate data.

Having said all of the above, let's cut to the point: how to copy a hard drive?

"Clone is a much safer way than copy & paste in data protecting, so clone hard drive is recommended when transferring all data to another hard drive."
