How to merge C and D drive Windows 7

Situation: With more and more data stored to C drive of Windows 7, now this partition is nearly out of space. However, there are lots of free space on D drive, so I want to know whether it is possible to merge C with D so as to enlarge system partition of Windows 7.

There Are 2 Ways to Merge C and D Drive

Definitely, users are able to merge partitions, and there are 2 methods available. One is to use Windows built-in disk management tool, and the other is to ask third-party partition manager for help. Next, we will introduce these 2 methods in detail, and users can choose the most appropriate one in accordance with actual demands.

Merge Drive C and Drive D with Windows Disk Management Utility

If users want to merge C and D via Disk Management, they need to backup all important data on D drive in advance, because this partition will be deleted, and naturally the original data will be lost. Detailed steps are shown as below.

Step 1: Right-click “Computer” icon on the desktop, choose “Manage” and click “Disk Management” to get its main interface as follows.

Comparing the 2 methods above, we can find resorting to third party partition manager is much better since it can help combine partitions without data loss. But for successful merging, users need to pay much attention to the following 3 issues:

1.MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition does not support merging partitions, so users need to purchase the professional edition or more advanced editions.
2.Both partitions should be adjacent.
3.Both partitions should be formatted with NTFS. If one of them is formatted with FAT, please convert it to NTFS.
